Victoria's Cross: ANZAC To Archangel: the Story of Sgt. Sam Pearse VC MM (2003) By Mike Irwin

This book tells the story of Samuel George Pearse who enlisted in July 1915 just before he turned 18. His occupation was listed as "rabbit trapper". He sailed from Melbourne with the 9th Reinforcement for the 7th Battalion, reaching Gallipoli shortly before the evacuation and only spending 2 weeks in the line. In September 1917 he was awarded the Military Medal for action on the Western Front in Belgium where he single-handedly raided a German machine gun-post. Following the Armistice, he was attracted to the prospect of a tour of duty with the North Russia Relief Force. Pearse, along with 150 other Australian, joined the 45th Battalion , the Royal Fusiliers, the British Army, where he was soon promoted to Sergeant. It was during the North Russia Campaign, under the command of Lionel Sadleir-Jackson, where he was awarded the Victoria Cross for conspicuous bravery, devotion to duty and self-sacrifice during an action against an enemy battery. Unfortunately, Sergeant Pearse was killed a minute after his gallant action took place and he was buried at Souset Cemetery, North Russia.
