The Poetry Of War 1914-1989 (1989) By Simon Fuller

 

This collection of war poems is intended to bring alive the images of war through the eyes of men in combat and those left behind. The accompanying book is linked with the BBC radio program for schools and the cassette contains readings

 

The poetry covers not only World War I, World War II, Hiroshima, the Nuclear Age and Vietnam, but also the more recent Falklands conflict and the age old troubles in Northern Ireland. There are poems from the home front, plus poems of protest concerning the nuclear threat and while not glorifying war, they recognise the sacrifices made in war.

 

Up-to-date poems of war, many never published before, are included as are poems are written from a wider perspective than just the soldier or sailor, reflecting the frequently bitter, sometimes witty, always tragic realities of war in the 20th century.
