The Army List (1846) By War Office

Unofficial lists of Officers of the British Army and, from 1862, the Indian Army, that were published annually between 1840 and 1915. There are also quarterly issues for 1839, 1842 and 1854. The lists are contained in 75 volumes and appear under various titles. They were initially created by Lieutenant-General George Hart (1808-1878).

The Army List (1846) by the War Office was an official publication detailing British Army officers, their ranks, regiments, and postings, part of a long series of official lists (monthly, quarterly, half-yearly) used for administration and research, essential around the 1881 Childers Reforms, which reorganised infantry regiments into paired battalions. These lists provide crucial details for military history and genealogical research, detailing appointments, promotions, and regimental structures for officers, including those from the colonial and Indian Army.
