Art & War: Twentieth Century Warfare As Depicted By War Artist (1990) By M. R. D. Foot

This is a book about war more than about art; the multitude of pictures it contains are chosen from the collection in the Imperial War Museum, to show how much they can portray of the conduct and experience of war. The Imperial War Museum holds over twelve thousand twentieth-century paintings and drawings, from which Professor M.R.D. Foot has selected 288 of the finest - many of which have never been reproduced before. Here, vividly portrayed in both colour and black and white illustrations are human-kind under the strongest pressure - the pressure of war. These pictures bear testament to what trench life or life on the march, or life in an air raid shelter were like in the two great wars of the twentieth century and in the Falklands conflict. The artists did not have to rely on imagination - they were witnesses present. M.R.D. Foot, the distinguished author of SOE in France and Resistance, has written a concise and authoritative text to accompany the illustrations in this magnificent book.
