David Stevens has been the Director of Strategic and Historical Studies within the Sea Power Centre – Australia since retiring from the Navy in 1994. He joined the Royal Australian Naval College in 1974 as a cadet midshipman and subsequently completed a BA degree at the University of NSW. After graduation he spent time in a variety of Australian fleet units gaining bridge watchkeeping experience before specialising as an anti-submarine warfare officer. In 1984-86 he served on exchange in the Royal Navy and was one of the first Australians to conduct a Falkland Islands peace patrol. In 1990-91 he was posted to the staff of the Australian Task Group Commander during Operation DAMASK and the 1991 Gulf War. Prior to leaving the Navy he spent a number of years in the capability development area working on antisubmarine and communications projects. In 1992 he graduated from the Australian National University with an MA (Strategic Studies) and in 2000 received his PhD in history from the UNSW at ADFA. He remains a Commander in the RAN Reserve and in 2003 deployed on Operations BASTILLE and FALCONER (Iraq War) as the historian attached to the staff of the Australian Task Group Commander.
