"49th Parallel" Promotional Photographs (1941)
 
Director-producer duo Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's third joint project was this propaganda drama for the Ministry of Information, made with the express intention of persuading the United States to join the war effort. The cast includes Eric Portman, Laurence Olivier, Glynis Johns, Leslie Howard and Raymond Massey. Six German sailors, led by Lieutenant Hirth (Portman), find themselves stranded in Canada when their U-boat is sunk in Hudson Bay by the Canadian Air Force. They had been sent ashore to raid for supplies, but now they decide to try to make it overland to the safety of the neutral United States. It's a dangerously eventful journey for them and those they encounter, who include local Inuit, Canadian trappers and an ethnic German community. The film was edited by David Lean, and Emeric Pressburger won an Oscar for Best Original Story.
